Hornitos - Through the Gate

Hornitos' history predates the Gold Rush, with indigenous peoples, likely the Miwok and Yokut tribes, inhabiting the region for thousands of years. However, significant changes came with the arrival of Spanish explorers and missionaries in the late 18th century. The area became part of the vast Spanish land grants, and the influence of Spanish culture left a lasting imprint on the region.

The discovery of gold at Sutter's Mill in 1848 ignited the California Gold Rush, triggering one of the largest human migrations in history. Hornitos, situated in the heart of the Mother Lode, quickly became a bustling center of mining activity. Prospectors from around the world flocked to the area in search of their fortunes.

Legend has it that Hornitos derived its name from the Spanish word for "little ovens" or "little furnaces," referring to the small, dome-shaped adobe ovens used by miners to bake bread. These ovens dotted the landscape, symbolizing the industrious spirit of the town's residents.

During its peak, Hornitos thrived as a vibrant mining town, boasting a diverse population of miners, merchants, and entrepreneurs. The town's streets buzzed with activity as saloons, boarding houses, and businesses sprang up to cater to the needs of the burgeoning population.

Hornitos was home to several notable figures who left their mark on California's history. One such figure was Joaquin Murrieta, a charismatic bandit and outlaw who roamed the region during the Gold Rush era. Murrieta's exploits became the stuff of legend, and his presence in Hornitos added to the town's reputation as a lawless frontier outpost.

The population of Hornitos was a melting pot of cultures, with immigrants from Europe, China, Mexico, and other parts of the world converging on the town in search of wealth and opportunity. This diverse mix of peoples contributed to the rich tapestry of Hornitos' cultural heritage.

Many residents moved on to seek their fortunes elsewhere, leaving behind a town that had lost much of its former glory. In recognition of its historical significance, Hornitos was designated a California Historical Landmark (#345). Efforts to preserve the town's historic buildings and structures have ensured that its rich heritage remains intact for future generations to appreciate.

     * Arrive in the morning with a full tank of GAS, fuel stop approximately 120 miles

• We will meet in the parking lot of Bass Pro Manteca,CA

• 1356 Bass Pro Dr Manteca,CA  and depart from there. Please bring lunch and any other refreshments or specific snacks you require. Ride approximately 175 -200 miles round-trip

• All riders must possess a valid drivers license with motorcycle endorsement, valid registration and current proof of insurance. All participants must wear all required safety gear including helmet.

• OPTIONAL HOTEL Prior to Event: (Hotel not included) Riders are responsible for booking their hotel reservations.
