About the event

Embark on a truly unique and captivating adventure as we ride through the picturesque and historically rich sites of Mariposa, and Stanislaus counties. Our journey will take us through a landscape that holds the echoes of the California Gold Rush, weaving through the stories of Dog Town, Coulterville, French Bar, and La Grange.
Whistling Billy was a small steam locomotive used in a gold-mining area in Coulterville, California in the late 1800s.
It wasn’t a big train engine. It was a little industrial steam engine built by the H.K. Porter Company around 1897. Its job was to haul gold ore from a mine to a stamp mill a few miles away on a narrow-gauge track.
People called it Whistling Billy because the engineer apparently blew the whistle a lot while running it.
