Knights Ferry, settled by Dr. William Knight in 1849, became a pivotal crossing point on the Stanislaus River during the Gold Rush. Dr. Knight's foresight led to the establishment of a ferry business that thrived during the gold rush, reaching profits as high as $500 per day. Despite Dr. Knight's unfortunate murder in 1849, the town continued to prosper. The construction of the Knights Ferry Bridge in 1863, the longest covered bridge west of the Mississippi, stands as a testament to the resilience and innovation of the community.
