About the event
Embark on a thrilling motorcycle adventure that transcends the boundaries of dense forests. We will lead you to the breathtaking Alpine meadow known as Bear Trap Basin. As you ride through this pristine landscape, you'll be immersed in the beauty of wildflowers and surrounded by majestic, quaking, aspen trees. In fact, two of these quaking aspen trees have recently gained recognition from the Calaveras Ranger District as the largest in California.
We will take a moment to savor the tranquility of Bear Trap Basin as you enjoy your lunch in the midst of this Alpine paradise. The historic Bear Trap Cabin, nestled within the basin, adds a touch of nostalgia to our journey. Owned by the forest service and open to the public, this two-story cabin stands as a testament to the area's rich history. Maintained as an emergency refuge, the cabin is stocked with dry food and firewood during winter, providing a potential lifeline in the face of extreme weather conditions. While sparsely furnished, the cabin's stove becomes a crucial source of warmth, offering solace to those who may find themselves stranded during a winter storm.
Bear Trap Basin and its surroundings are renowned for their extreme winters and record-setting snow depths. Nearby Tamarack, boasts an impressive snowfall legacy, holding the record for the greatest snow depth ever measured in North America. The U.S. snowfall record for one month stands at a staggering 390 inches (32.5 feet), recorded in January 1911. Tamarack also claims the U.S. seasonal snow depth record of 454 inches (37.8 feet) recorded in March 1911. To top it off, the Sierra Nevada witnessed an extraordinary snowfall during one season, with Tamarack, California, recording a staggering 884 inches (73.7 feet) in the winter of 1906-07.
